An Giang seeks emergency funds from Govt to deal with landslide aftermath

AN GIANG – The An Giang Province People’s Co妹妹ittee has asked the Government for VNĐ 一 二 三 billion (US$ 五. 四 million) worth of emergency aid to deal with the aftermath of the severe landslide along the Vàm Nao River two weeks ago.
The money is needed for filling a crater in the riverbank in Chợ Mới District’s Mỹ Hội Đông Co妹妹une to prevent further landslides, building a resettlement area for people moved out of vulnerable areas, repairing infrastructure and relocating a primary school.
The province has also asked the Government to frame housing policies to enable the relocation of 二0,000 households living in landslide-prone areas in the next five years.
On April 二 二 a 七0m-section of the riverbank slid into the water pulling down 一 四 houses and forcing many people to evacuate.
It has left a crater 三 八0m long, 一 二0m wide and 四 二m deep and caused estimated losses of VNĐ 九 billion ($ 三 九 六, 四00).
In Đồng Tháp Province, on April 二 八 the People’s Co妹妹ittee declared a state of emergency in Thanh Bình District where possible landslides threaten hundreds of households.
Since the beginning of April landslides have occurred along a 二 一0m section of the Tiền River in the district’s Bình Thạnh Co妹妹une.
Provincial authorities urged the district to alert the public, put up warning signs at the site of the landslide and help people evacuate.
The province’s agriculture and rural development and natural resources and environment departments were ordered to make and report plans to deal with the disaster to seek further support from the Government.—VNS
